Project Update - December 2005

Summary

When fully operational, the higher education faculty development model can help improve the quality of education by making the Library of Congress (LOC) resources essential texts in learning and the use of the LOC by faculty and teachers an automatic part of their everyday instructional routine. Over time, faculty members from all academic areas relevant to teacher education may use the LOC as a text in their courses. It can become a strand throughout the teacher education curriculum, meaning that students will progressively learn about the LOC and apply that learning in general education, professional education, field experiences, and student teaching. In participating institutions, the aim is for every new teacher to be well-prepared and well-equipped to use the LOC as an essential resource in teaching and learning.

Higher education faculty will also be able to offer in-service professional development on using the LOC effectively to classroom teachers, expanding the impact of the project.

In addition, the model enables higher education faculty to maintain an ongoing process of development that can influence their teaching, research, and service.
