Annual Project Plan - 2003-2004
Overview
From July 1, 2003 to June 30, 2004,
the Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities
(FIICU) will work with ERC and
LOC staff to facilitate a significant expansion of the
Adventure of the American Mind (AAM) project in Illinois.
This will be accomplished by assisting five Illinois independent
colleges that are not receiving AAM funding with developing
graduate and undergraduate AAM courses and follow-up professional
development activities for pre-service teachers and
in-service teachers within their regions. This initiative
will target teacher education faculty at the five participating
institutions, involving two faculty from each institution
in an intensive workshop that will orient them to the
AAM project; introduce them to the digitized, primary source
materials available through the LOC’s American Memory
site; familiarize them with AAM course curricula and other
materials developed at other institutions; and launch them
in preparing AAM curricula for use at their institutions.
Project staff with expertise in curriculum
and instruction and in instructional technology will support
the 10 faculty
participants in this process, and a project Web site will
enhance communication among them while providing a central
place to post curriculum materials in draft form. The new
courses and professional development activities will be in
place for the fall semester of 2004, enrolling approximately
200 teachers (40 at each of the five colleges) during the
2004–2005 academic year. The courses and professional
development activities will be taught and directed by the
10 teacher education faculty who participate in the AAM workshop.
By taking a college-by-college approach
that focuses on helping teacher education faculty to incorporate
AAM training
into the teacher education curriculum, this initiative will
enact a cost-effective approach to expanding participation
in the AAM project. Over the next five years, approximately
1000 teachers will experience the implementation of the new
AAM curricula at the five participating institutions, which
will affect at least 25,000 students. With its 55 member
institutions and its long, successful history of cooperation
with them, the FIICU is well-positioned to carry out this
initiative.
Objectives
This initiative will be guided by the
following objectives. By June 30, 2004:
- Five independent Illinois
colleges and universities that are not receiving AAM funding
but that have active teacher
education programs will be recruited to participate in this
initiative, and a written commitment to full participation
in the project will be obtained from each of the five college
and university presidents.
- Two teacher education faculty
from each of the five colleges will be chosen as their
institutions’ AAM
participants, and one administrator at each of the five
colleges will be identified to guide and support the
process of curriculum
change within each institution.
- The 10 teacher education
faculty and the five administrators will attended an
orientation session on this initiative conducted
by the project staff.
- The 10 teacher education
faculty will attend an intensive workshop that draws
on the resources of the AAM
project at the national and state levels to initiate
the process of developing AAM courses and continuing professional
development opportunities for pre-service and in-service
teachers enrolled at the participating institutions.
- With the ongoing support
of the project staff, the process of developing AAM
curricula at the five participating
institutions will have been completed, and the course
and continuing professional development offerings will
have been
made a part of the course schedule for the 2004-2005
academic year, with the goal of enrolling 40 students at
each institution.
