Annual Project Plan - 2005-2006

Overview and Objectives

During its third year of participation in the AAM project, the Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities will continue its emphasis on working with teacher educator at member institutions as a means of advancing the use of LOC digitized materials by new teachers across the state of Illinois, and ultimately by large numbers of Illinois students. This initiative will be guided by the following objectives:

  • Use multiple strategies to disseminate project results at the state, regional, and national levels, focusing both on use of LOC resources and, more broadly, on model, replicable approaches to faculty development enacted through this project.
  • Bring two new Federation schools into the project, providing the resources and training needed for these new partners to develop AAM courses and other AAM-related learning activities that are appropriate for their pre-service teachers.
  • Implement, evaluate, and revise AAM credit courses and other instructional activities for pre-service teachers that were developed by the five original partner colleges/universities during year one of the project.
  • Further integrate LOC web-based resources into the curricula of the partner schools through cross-department collaboration and other strategies.
  • Expand educational resources for teacher education faculty involved in the project and provide numerous opportunities for collaboration and information exchange.

Activities

As these objectives suggest, project activities will be remain similar to previous years but place a greater stress on dissemination followed by expansion; and continuing implementation, integration, evaluation and resource development.

Dissemination and resource development:

During this third project year, the stress is on disseminating the products and processes developed during year one and implemented during year two. The dissemination will include full implementation of the project web-based clearing house, presentations at professional conferences focusing on state and regional meetings, publishing in pertinent journals as well as pursuing self-publishing opportunities for project materials and a spring conference for Federation members. The 10 original faculty members as well as the four new faculty will participate in these activities.

An important aspect of dissemination concerns the web-based resource "clearing house" that provides content activities, models of professional development processes, tutorials for technology and other curricular activities, web links and other resources, and a bibliography of references. This clearing house will contribute significantly to the sustainability of the project by making the induction of new teacher education faculty less dependent on group workshops. Eventually, other teacher educators will be able to join the project at any time and from anywhere in the state, with the assistance of an increasingly rich, easily accessible array of resource materials and the help of one or more of the growing cadre of AAM teacher educators also produced by this project—whose names and contact information will also be listed on the clearing house web site.

Resource development will also continue during year three as faculty expand and refine their curricular materials. At appropriate times, new or revised materials will be added to the web-based clearing house.

Orientation and expansion:

Two new institutions and four new faculty will begin participation in the AAM project, July 1, 2005. The faculty will develop their activities during summer 2005 and implement during the 2005-2006 academic year. Orientation of the new faculty will occur through consultations with project staff, use of the web-based clearing house and participation in a new partners meeting scheduled for fall 2005. Also, each independent college or university new to the project will be paired with the original partner institution that is closest to it geographically to encourage communication, material sharing, and class observations.

The dissemination activities are also geared to expanding the impact of the AAM project. An important consideration is consulting with other AAM programs looking to develop high education faculty development initiatives. In creating their own AAM courses and other curricula, new participants and established projects will have access to the 10 original participants and their materials.

Integration, and Evaluation: During this second third year, the faculty participants will continue their implementation efforts aiming to further embed the AAM instructional activities and materials into the broader pre-service and in-service curriculum by collaborating with colleagues both within and across departments. They will also continue working with the project evaluator to assess their effectiveness and make changes as needed.

Personnel

This initiative will be carried out by 5 key project staff:

Co-Directors:

Dr. Mark Newman, a senior teacher education faculty member from National-Louis University, one of the Federation’s 55 member institutions, will continue as one of the project’s two co-directors on a 20% basis during the summer of 2005 and a 33 1/3/% basis during the subsequent academic year. Dr. Newman will coordinate the activities described above, working intensively with the 10 returning faculty participants and the 4 new participants in the process.

Dr. Donald Fouts will continue as the project’s other co-director. Dr. Fouts is President Emeritus of the Federation, and the current President of the Illinois Institute of Independent Colleges and Universities, a partner organization. Committing 13% of his time and effort to this project, Dr. Fouts will serve as the project liaison to the organization’s membership, ensuring the continued involvement of the five original college and university partners and the two new institutions which Dr. Fouts has already recruited into the project. Dr. Fouts will collaborate with the other co-director to plan and conduct effective partner meetings and the one-day AAM conferences. He will also provide budget management as well as overall project oversight.

Faculty/Assistant Director:

Dr. Costas Spirou, a senior faculty at National-Louis University, will expand his involvement in the AAM project. Dr. Spirou will assist the co-directors in all activities but his primary responsibility is managing the web-based clearing house. Dr. Spirou will serve on a 20% basis in summer 2005 and receive a $2,000 stipend during the 2005-2006 academic year (This figure may change depending upon funding and expenditures.)

Project Evaluator

Dr. Jan Perney, a senior teacher education faculty member at National-Louis University, will serve as the project evaluator on a stipend basis of $1,000 during the 2005-2006 academic year. Dr. Perney will work closely with the Co-Directors and other key staff to implement evaluation strategies and provide both formative assessment that will influence the evolution of the project and a summative evaluation that will create a record of its accomplishments that will be of value to other teacher educators.

Project Coordinator

During the summer of 2004, a graduate student will serve for 7 weeks as a Project Coordinator, working approximately 20 hours per week. During that time, the Project Coordinator will assist the Co-Director and Assistant Director on all tasks.

Administrative Assistant:

An administrative assistant will support the work of the other five project staff. This individual’s responsibilities will include making arrangements for the new participant orientation sessions, the general participant meetings, and the one-day AAM conferences that will include lodging, catering, transportation, AV equipment, and copying of workshop materials. The administrative assistant will also maintain documentation for all project expenditures and prepare monthly reimbursement requests to the ERC under the supervision of the Institute President. In addition, he or she will serve as a central point of communication for those involved in this geographically dispersed project.

Graduate Assistant

A graduate student from National-Louis University’s College of Education who is preparing for a career as a teacher will provide additional assistance to this growing project on a 10-hour-per-week basis for academic year 2005-2006.
