Brief Summary of Six Ways to Implement
the AAM Workshop
Series
The following are examples for implementing the workshop
series. These approaches were formulated to fit with
local needs and training programs. Additional ways of applying
the workshops are also possible.
- Technology
Workshop Series
(for schools whose districts don’t have technology
workshops)
The
Adventure of the American Mind’s Technology
Workshop Series will provide schools with 35 hours of
workshops that include technology training. The goal
of the workshops is to provide teachers the knowledge
and skills necessary to incorporate the digital primary
resources found at the Library of Congress’s
American Memory Web site and other Internet resources
into course
units of study. The workshops may be conducted after
school, on staff development days, or other agreed-upon
times.
- Digital Primary Resources Workshop Series
(for districts
with a Technology Workshop Program)
The Adventure
of the American Mind’s Digital Primary
Resources Workshop Series will provide schools with 21
hours of workshops for teachers that have successfully
completed local technology training. The goal of the
workshops is to provide technology-literate teachers
the knowledge and skills necessary to incorporate the
digital primary resources found at the Library of Congress’
American Memory Web site and other Internet resources
into course units of study. The workshops may be conducted
after school, on staff development days, or other agreed-upon
times. The AAM staff can conduct the workshop sessions
for the district or can provide the district’s
technology training staff the knowledge necessary to
incorporate digital primary resources into existing technology
workshops using the train-the-trainer staff development
model.
- Video Conference Workshop Series
The Video Conference
Workshop Series is designed for schools (or individuals)
wishing to utilize the “any
time, any place” staff development model. Interactive
workshops can be arranged using one-way or two-way video
conferencing. Topics can also be viewed passively at
any time using video streaming. Workshop topics include
the instructional use of technology in the classroom
as well as how to incorporate the digital primary resources
found at the Library of Congress’ American Memory
Web site and other Internet resources into course units
of study.
- Summer Graduate Credit
Class for Classroom Teachers
The Summer Graduate Credit
Class is designed for classroom teachers who wish to
become more skilled in the use of
technology in the classroom. This free, three-week graduate
credit, professional development course provides teachers
the knowledge and skills necessary to incorporate the
digital primary resources found at the Library of Congress’s
American Memory Web site and other Internet resources
into course units of study. Teachers successfully completing
the course will produce a multimedia presentation, WebQuest,
and web page that incorporate primary digital resources
into course lesson plans.
- Teacher Grant Program
The Adventure of the American
Mind Teacher Grant Program provides funding for teachers
with ideas of how to incorporate
the primary digital resources found at the Library of
Congress’s American Memory Web site into course
units of study. Individuals or teams of teachers may
apply for grant funding. Grant requests must:
- Include
the digital resources found at the American Memory
Web site
- Use technology as an instructional tool.
- Address
one or more of the curriculum standards.
Grantees must attend five workshop
sessions which cover: 1) grant requirements, 2) digital
primary resources of
the American Memory Web site, and 3) use of the technology
selected for purchase with grant funds. Final products
will include lesson plans, copies of handouts and other
resources developed for the grant, and documentation
of the use of the lesson plans with students.
- Local History Summer
Institute
The Adventure of the American
Mind Local History Summer Institute (35 hours) provides technology
proficient teachers
the
opportunity to research local history primary resources
for use in his/her classroom. The goal of the institute
is to provide classroom teachers the skills necessary
to locate and preserve local primary resources in a
digital format which can be used in course units
of study. The
free, six-day institute includes several days of research
at local historical sites. Participants will be divided
into research teams. Each team will develop lesson
plans that include a multimedia presentation that
can be used
in a classroom unit of study.
