My Neighbor is Considering a Patent for His Invention

My neighbor did some research about getting a patent for a product that he just invented. He said that he would not mind doing the complicated paperwork that goes along with a patent application, but he was concerned with the fees and the amount of time that it takes to get a patent. He was told by someone that it would cost him thousands of dollars to get one and he should expect to wait almost two years to get the patent approved and finalized. He feels that this is a long time and a lot of money to go into a small invention.
